Golden Eagles FC 5-2 Sunset Knights
Eagles progress to the League Cup semi-finals with an overall 10-2 aggregate win over Knights. With the visitors needing a miracle, they had set up with a very aggressive 4-3-3 and went straight for the jugular. Knights thiught they had earned a penalty after only 3 minutes, Tarik Törmänen looked to have committed a foul on Josiah Key, but a free kick was given thr other way instead!
However, it didn't take long for Knights to find a goal, Henry Nurse scored on the turn in the 10th minute with a wonderful piece of skill. However it didn't take long for Eagles to pull level with a deadly counter led by Juan Álvarez in the 20th minute. The Spaniard made a quick break, holding the ball up before Julio Xavier whizzed passed him, Álvarez threaded the ball through and the Mexican scored with a wicked dipping shot!
Álvarez then got a goal himself after a neat back-heeled pass from Asp Naslund 5 minutes later. And Xavier grabbed a 3rd for Eagles in the 31st minute as young Ragnar Varskjøld did well under pressure before passing to him and Xavier's shot cannoned in off the post.
And the Mexican striker completed a remarkable 17 minute hattrick in the 37th, with Naslund involved yet again, what a great game they are both having, Knights getting torn apart, 4-1 and it looked to be very much game over.
There was still some fight in Knights in the 2nd half however and Royston While grabbed a goal on the hour mark to make it 4-2, but there was still a mountain to climb. And the game was put well out of reach as subs Darío Bourrin and Jussi Härmäläinen linked up to score a 5th for Eagles. As the Frenchman squared the ball to the Finn, whose lovely control took him past his marker and he hammered his shot home. Varskjøld almost grabbed himself his first goal for the club in the dying minutes with a cheeky lob, but Lev Yashin plucked the ball out of the air. Still a great performance by the young Norwegian and manager Dave Rosewell will certainly be happy to see the younger players beginning to gel in well.
After the game, it was announced that Eagles will face AFC Coventry in the quarter-finals who finished 2nd in their group earlier in the competition.
